Radio
Lumbini (RL) began broadcasting in January 2000, on the frequency
96.8MHz FM. At Radio Lumbini all set-up and running costs have been
financed locally. The license is held and the station managed by a
local cooperative through an active
Board of Directors, a manager and a series of committees. Radio Lumbini
is the first example of a co-operative radio in South Asia and the
first rural radio in Nepal. The station has been running now at Manigram,
Rupandehi district of Lumbini zone in Nepal. It lies near Lumbini
the birth place of Lord Buddha. Radio Lumbini aims
to increase people's participation in community development
by encouraging social, cultural and environmental awareness. The station
broadcasts fourteen and a half hours a day to a rural/semi-urban area
of Nepal's southern flatlands. The programs of Radio Lumbini are enjoyed
by 1.2 million people of the entire Rupandehi district and some areas
of Kapilvastu, Gulmi and Nawalparasi district. |
